Citation:  Junker, Patricia A. John Steuart Curry: Inventing the Middle West. NY: Hudson Hills Press, 1998; and American Art Journal v 9 (November 1977) p. 68.
Index Words:  weather, wagon, mules, haybarn, storm
Place:  Kansas
Notes:  In Henry Adams' essay Space, Weather, Myth, and Astraction in the Art of John Steuart Curry, (Junker, pp. 112-132), he calls this work among the oddest paintings in American art, a piece that violates nearly every rule in of traditional composition. Curry seems to have been torn between producing a conventional landscape painting, filled with hackneyed motifs, and making something more mysterious and abstract.
