Index Words:  haystack, marsh
Place:  England
Notes:  Seen in the Getty Center. According to the Getty Museum annotation to the 2007 exhibit, Emerson ignored the crowds of tourists and amusements along the broads as well as the fact that the region's agriculture was failing. Instead he turned his gaze to the overlooked aspects of the landscape, such as the flooding marshlands and disheveled haystacks depicted in this image. Emerson's aim was to transform what otherwise might have appeared to be subjectless into a site that conveyed meaning through a potent visual engagement with nature.

Notes:  Seen in the Getty exhibit, 2007. Emerson 'hoped to preserve, at least photographically, these traditional ways of life, which he believed were at risk of becoming obsolete. He endeavored to be the guardian of the rural social order, but his images present idealized types that match his subjective vision.ĉ Emerson opposed modern machinery encroaching upon the traditions of the countryside. He once said, No machine will be invented which will do the work as well as the scythe. The subject of a mower sharpening his blade, as seen in this image, also appeared often in late 19th-century paintings.'

Notes:  The central painting of a triptych of seasons. homson compensates for the poor black and white reproduction with a careful textual description: the paint is handled in long, flowing lines to represent the swathes of cut grassÉThe predominant tonality is a hramony of secondaries, the warm greens of the meadows offset by the resonant violets of the hills beyond.
