Place:  France
Notes:  ^^^ A row of cocks curves back toward a horse-drawn wagon, already heavily loaded. A small dog in the foreground punctuates the row. Two men and two women, in Breton costume, work together in the field. A very similar composition, unremarked by Wildenstein, is in the New Orleans Museum of Art (ID 3608).

Date of Work:  1888
Medium:  oil
Period/Style:  nineteenth century
URL:  http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/detail.php?ID=2557

Index Words:  hayfield, cocks, children, play, dog
Place:  France
Notes:  The setting is very similar to that of ID 602, what Wildenstein calls the Lollichon field, with a cottage and church tower in the background. But here the three human figures, though young girls, are large and prominent. They dwarf the same small dog that was featured in ID 602 and also appeared in another of Gauguin's 1888 oils 'Dogs Running Through a Field' (Wildenstein, p. 393)

Title of Work:  Haystack near Arles
Date of Work:  1888
Medium:  oil
Period/Style:  nineteenth century
URL:  http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/detail.php?ID=2057
Citation:  Wildenstein, Daniel. Gauguin: A Savage in the Making: Catalogue Raisonne of the Paintings (1873-1888) Skira, 2002, p. 506-507 [color]
Index Words:  haystack, architecture
Place:  France
Notes:  ^^^ Wildenstein notes the 'deliberately Cezannesque treatment.' This is especially true of the simplified planes of the buildings. The enigmatic rectilinear structure at left is probably a wall. In a more modern painting we should interpret it as a balestack! Another Wildenstein comment is bemusing: 'even today, autumnal cereal stacks awaiting threshing are not unusual.' More helpfully: ' Van Gogh had painted a striking series of haystacks in June 1888, and these may have influenced Gauguin's choice of subject at a time when the area was new to him. However similar the subjects, however, the difference in treatment is equally striking...there had been a tinge of opposition in their emulation [of Cezanne], and their different reference points are increasingly clear.'
