Date of Work:  2002
Medium:  photograph
Period/Style:  twentyfirst century

Citation:  Meyerowitz, Joel. Aftermath, NY: Phaison, 2006, pp. 316-317.
Index Words:  rakes, urban, war
Place:  New York
Notes:  Struck by the word aftermath which has ancient connotations with haymaking, I was startled to find, on p. 316, a reference to nineteenth century harvest painiting: Here the workers are raking through the debris one final time. I find myself thinking of Millet's Gleaners and I wonder why so many of the late images stimulate connections to the art of the past. Is it that things are simplerand therefore more clearly seen? Or am I holding on to these images fixing them in my mind by referring to works of the past to establish continutiy? Is it wrong not to simply let them be what they are, people picking over the fields? [JM, pp. 316-317]
