Index Words:  grainstacks
Place:  France
Notes:  One grainstack, strongly backlit, casts a triangular shadow towards the right foreground; another backlit stack is only partly shown at the left edge of the frame. Although the title includes the phrase 'last rays', the sun still seems to be well above the horizon, although the light it casts is sunset red.

Index Words:  grainstacks
Place:  France
Notes:  Two grainstacks are partially shown, the closer at the left edge of the frame hiding some of the one behind it. Both are backlit with bright edges, their shadows angled towards the lower right corner. A circular light suggesting filtered sun emerges to the right of the larger stack in a sky consturcted of linear brushstrokes comparable to those of late Van Gogh.

Title of Work:  Grainstacks (Meules)
Date of Work:  1890
Medium:  oil
Period/Style:  nineteenth century
URL:  http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/detail.php?ID=3627
Citation:  Wildenstein, Daniel. Claude Monet: Biographie et Catalogue Raisonne. Lausanne; Paris: La Biblioteque des Arts, 1974-1991, cat 1273.
Index Words:  grainstacks
Place:  France
Notes:  The two grainstacks are framed very like those in ID 557, but the phrase 'last rays' seems more appropriate to this light. The sky glows from gold through streaks of red to the upper corner blue, the same blue used heavily in the shadows on the stacks and the ground. The angle of the sunlight to lower right is similar but the tones are much deeper than those of ID 557.

Notes:  Two grainstacks, the larger just right of center on a dull winter day which casts no shadow, both still carry snow asymmetrically to the right, suggesting earlier sun melting from the left. The field and the village roofs are still snow covered.
