Index Words:  hayshed, horses, wagon
Place:  Virginia
Notes:  The most southerly Dutch-style hayshed we've yet discovered. The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza annotation gives useful geographic and stylistic background: Jones based Summer in the Blue Ridge on the sketches which he made in 1873 when he travelled by railway around Maryland and Virginia. He retains the panoramic format typical of the Hudson River School artists as well as the highly detailed description of the vegetation and the geographical terrain. However, more naturalistic elements now begin to appear, such as the use of a low viewpoint or the relegation of the human figure to the middle ground. In addition, in line with the Barbizon School artists, whose work Jones could have encountered when he travelled to Europe in 1870, light here is given greater protagonism than previously.
