Title of Work:  Haystacks
Date of Work:  c1890
Medium:  oil

Citation:  Zafran, Eric M. Santa Barbara collects impressions of France. Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1998, p. 67.
Index Words:  haystacks
Place:  France
Notes:  Zafran's commentary is useful, except in its conflation of the two different types of meule: 'The grain stacks which are commonly called haystacks in English and meules in French, were a frequent subject of the Impressionist painters in their careful scrutiny of the countryside.' He mentions the Monet stacks as though they were all of the same material and, more helpfully, refers to other Guillaumin stack paintings: 1883, snow-covered; others 1889-1891; and others featured in later prints. Cf. our ID 677 and ID 4832.
