Title of Work:  Harvest
Date of Work:  1945
Medium:  oil
Period/Style:  twentieth century

Citation:  Russia! Catalog of the exhibtion at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in NY. 2005, p. 59.
Index Words:  harvest, rake, scythe, war, resting, dog
Place:  Russia
Notes:  One of two Plastov harvest (possibly hay) paintings in the huge Russia! Show at the Guggenheim Museum (NY) in 2005. The catalog annotation by Masha Chlenova is excellent: 'A genre scene in the tradition of nineteenth-century painting, Harvest depicts an old man eating with his grandchildren during a break in haymaking. Although this painting clearly shows an image of return to peaceful renewal after the war, it also has a subtext that would have been easily legible to contemporary viewers: by showing only the very old and the very young, Plastov points to the enormous cost of the war.' Along with his Reaping (ID 960) Harvest won the Stalin Prize of 1946.
