Notes:  Our host was a retired farmer who had just spent the day helping out on his son's farm, so we asked him about the protected piles of weeds. Apparently they are flowers that are grown and harvested for their seeds. They are left to dry in the stacks and then taken off and threshed to release the seeds for consequent packaging and sale.

Image: Haystacks (SzŽnabogly‡k)

Artist:  Hollosy, Simon
Artist Birth Date:  1857
Artist Death Date:  1918
Artist Country: Hungarian
Title of Work:  Haystacks (SzŽnabogly‡k)
Date of Work:  1912
Medium:  oil
Period/Style:  twentieth century
URL:  http://www.hung-art.hu/tajkepek/szenabog.jpg
Citation:  Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest
Index Words:  haystacks
Place:  Romania
Notes:  ^^^ One of [Hollosy's] favourite subject matters was hay stacks overtowering the green field. He painted a variety of them either closer or from a distance. His brushwork, grandiose and excited, always reflected the character of the landscape accurately. There is harmony in nature: the atmosphere is colourful, thus the sky is green, and the field has purple reflexes, too, he would say to his pupils. He integrated complementary pairs of colours with pastose brushwork in order to avoid small dots of pointillism. With this technique, he managed to portray masses and vibration of air. The objective vision of nature was accompanied by a lyric interpretation always important for him. Hay Stacks, one of his most colourful pictures, recalls van Gogh with wild broken brushwork. A similar composition is ID 5597.
