Notes:  Traditional thatched Dutch hayshed, reconstructed at the Landis Valley Museum, Lancaster, PA in the Fall of 2001. A hay barrack is a farm out building used to protect farm crops such as hay. The structure is a roof supported on four posts, and the roof can be moved up and down the posts. It was a commonplace structure on the farm in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York in the 18th and 19th centuries. The barrack type farm out building existed in the middle Ages over Germany, the Netherlands, France and Italy. The barrack was not use in England.

Notes:  A chance meeting at a Santa Cruz dog park with Lionel Kirsher, Maria-Teodora Comsa and their Chesapeake with a Romanian name led to this gift from Lionel, a portrait of two hardworking Transylvanian farmers, near Brasov, tossing the hay. The one on the right is Maria's father who, ironically considering the traditional style of haymaking, has a tractor business. The background bushes seem to be invading the hayfield.

Notes:  Lionel's lovely autumnal view of a Transylvanian hayfield shows the characteristic field stacks. Maria Comsa tells me that the local name for the larger stacks is bugla and for the smaller is purcoi. These terms have been added to the more generic Latin term 'capita' in our polyglot hay dictionary.

Notes:  This fine image, reminiscent of Fox Talbot's more famous haystack from the previous century, was sent to me as a greeting card from Bella Thomson. Hardman found this scene on a Easter 1935 visit to Evesham. The rick, located near Kersoe in the Cotswolds, has been partly cut away for winter feeding.
