Citation:  Sharp, Kevin. A wilder image bright: Hudson River School paintings from the Manoogian Collection. Vero Beach, FL, 2004, front cover.
Index Words:  love, romance, wagon, hayfield
Place:  New Hampshire
Notes:  Sharp calls this painting 'Peace and Plenty, North Conway, New Hampshire.' He gives it vivid prominence in the Vero Museum catalog: details on the front and back cover and another detail on p.26, as well as extended annotation. The work 'reflected the larger issues of community and collectivity during the late stages of the Civil War.' On top of the heavily loaded wagon 'two young lovers steal a private moment from the family and neighbors who have gathered the harvest hay.' Yet the lovers seem less intent on each other than on the field of work and the mountains beyond it.

Notes:  There are at least two snow-capped haystacks among the cluster of farm buildings at left. Hay may also be the material on the roof of the cow shelter. According to Sharp, during the Civil War, 'the nation endowed familiar regional traditions with new poignancy, and even local weather patterns took on ideological significance. Blankets of snow, so common in the North, so rare in the South, were transformed by artists and poets into persuasive symbols of Northern continuity and the solidity of the Union.'
