Notes:  Since the Agricultural Revolution and before, hay for winter fodder for horses and cattle was as valuable as the other crops of the village. Meadow hay was the best and Wheaton Aston has a rare example of ancient water meadows within its boundary. Called 'The Micklemoors' on the 1838 Tithe Map today these 100 acres of unimproved hay meadows are since 1980 owned, preserved and farmed in the traditional way by 'English Nature'. They lie to the west of Wheaton Aston close to the parish boundary with Marston and were reached by four lanes from the village centre. These hayways were the most important lanes in a village. It is from this word that we get the modern word highway. [website notes by Ray Cowley]
