Notes:  cf ID 2874 for a similar scene of women haymaking in Newfoundland. While men worked in the fishery, women did most of the planting and fertilizing, and took great pride in keeping their potato gardens weed-free, or in the quality of their hay-making. Few outport women wasted their meagre land on ornamental flower gardening. Those who cultivated more than vegetable and hay crops grew flowers and herbs which had medicinal or seasoning uses, or raised small fruits such as black currants.

Notes:  Slaidburn is in West Yorkshire. Up until the 1980's, when it was largely superceded by silage-making, hay-time was one of the most important, difficult and busy times of year for farmers around Slaidburn. Many farmers and farm-workers also describe it nostalgically as one of the most pleasurable times of year, although usually in retrospect! Haymaking was one of the most physically demanding jobs on the farm, but in the days when labour was more plentiful than today, it was often also something of a social event with neighbours joining together to help get each other's hay crop in when they had cleared their own fields.
