Notes:  Greenwich Hospital on a windy day with a hay barge and steam packet on the choppy river. In a trade where cargoes earned money according to their weight, a barge with a hold full of hay would not earn very much, so it became a general practice when loading a hay stack onto a barge, to build it up on deck to a height of about 12 feet. In time special barges were built for this trade which were wider (beamier), were shallower in the water (so they could get up shallow creeks further) and with reduced size hatches (to give more deck space for the bales of hay).' Portcities annotation.

Index Words:  haystack
Place:  England
Notes:  ^^^ Schaaf's description on p.198 is astute: the image precisely defines its season : late April light and the sharp angle of the ladders shadow outlined on the roughly textured hay “ideal for modulating the light”. Schaaf quotes the observation of a nineteenth century critic who admired “the fidelity with every projecting fibre is given” and another who compared the stack with its freshly cut edge to “an open door.”
