Notes:  [Des Fontaines] particularly liked bucolic scenes from Norman as well as Parisian scenes. His pastels translate imponderability through the light, the openness, the wind; they suggest almost unreal trees, buildings, hay stacks, and the moving shape of people. Des Fontaines had the special skill to express essential forms by drowning them in a mist from which they emerge like mirages. The pastel technique was in perfect harmony with the secrets and whispers of Des Fontaines' art. This is particularly true in this picture where the crisp morning air floating on that fall day in Carqueiranne can be felt.
